Knowing what services exist and actually being able to use them can completely change someone’s daily life. At The Teapot 50+ Centre, community development isn’t about handing out flyers or posting links online. It’s about real advocacy, cutting through red tape, and making sure older adults in Lachine have direct access to the help they need.
To bridge the gap between reading about a service and actually feeling comfortable walking through the door, we created our Lachine 50+ Resource Tour. This on-the-ground activity brings participants directly to local community organizations. It gives everyone a complete view of Lachine’s support system while creating face-to-face connections with the people running those services. More than a tour, it brings neighbours together and builds a true sense of belonging.
Through our local network, the ressource tour and our team, we help connect members to essential support across three key areas:
- Food & Basic Needs
- Carrefour d’entraide Lachine: Offers food bank access, low-cost thrift options, frozen meals and collective kitchens.
- 59 St. Pierre (Place 59 Saint-Pierre): A key food hub in Saint-Pierre hosting weekly fresh markets, Moisson Montréal distributions, and a community kitchen. They also offer homemade prepared frozen meals.
- Community Gardens (Jardins communautaires): Neighbourhood spaces where members grow their own fresh produce and share gardening tips.
- Social Life & Peer Support
- Groupe d’entraide Lachine: Offers peer support, mutual aid, and mental health programs to keep isolated residents connected.
- Groupe des handicapés(CDPHLSL): Focuses on local accessibility while offering social activities for adults living with mobility or functional challenges.
- CMRL (Centre multi-ressources de Lachine): Offers intergenerational activities, social and leisure activities, Geriatrie Social, friendship calls, and family support.
- La Petite Maison Saint-Pierre & Local Libraries: Friendly neighbourhood spaces, including the Saul-Bellow and Saint-Pierre libraries, offering free workshops, tech help, and social drop-ins.
- Healthcare & Housing Services
- CLSC de Lachine / CIUSSS: Connects individuals to primary care, a psychosocial walk-in clinic, home care evaluations, and local health networks.
- Housing & Advocacy Partners: Works alongside groups like Comité de logement Lachine to protect tenants’ rights and prevent senior homelessness.
